After having been taken down on several internet sites I finally got to watch the trailer for The Damned United and couldn't be more disappointed. The book, about Brain Clough's very short tenure as Leeds United manager, was a seething masterpiece of hatred, alcoholism, partisanship and no-nonsense old school football. The trailer looked like someone was worried that this dark, brooding book wouldn't sell, so decided to 'jazz it up' and make it more appealing to the masses. What the hell happened in its development? Real life 1970's Yorkshire not doing it for you guys? Shane Meadows was busy? I know, we'll turn it into a comedy! Why not change the ending and have Billy Bremner lifting the European Cup before turning to have a passionate embrace with Cloughie? I really hope they don't screw this up.
