Sounds of Brazil (in Hats)

So I'm introduced to a Brazilian guy who travels the world making surf films and living the beach life. After I got over the fact that his lifestyle is infinitely better than mine we got down to a drinking session lasting several hours which ended with Johnny getting the itunes out and giving me a drunken discourse on the history of contemporary Brazilian music. Big hip hop, reggae, and of course baile funk scenes continue to flourish, and this and a lot of the early samba scene can be watched on youtube (and ripped!) . Much of what I wrote down with one eye closed and biro on a napkin, is either misspelt or just wrong but here's a a great bit of footage of Jorge Bem, and the stage/dancers/props have to be the maddest ever seen:

Jorge Bem - Os Alquimistas

Now this is a truly nuts baile funk soundclash between MC Sapao and MC Popeye, and some dude who sounds like MC Creed. Trust me, stick with it as it kicks off:

That was well over a week ago. Already slipping on the blogging. Must....try...harder! Here's something that I've been listening to tonight, well worth your attention:

Also the photo at the top was taken from a charity party for Libre Infancia at Passing Cloud 2 and the whole soundsystem was there with a full strength line up (we've transferred in an MC for the 08-09 season). The manager actually stopped our set 40 minutes in as we were playing 'repetitive electronic beats' and no folk, funk or world music. What a twat.
